About Dr. Son

Shannon Son, MD, MSCI, is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Her approach to patient care involves working as a team with her patients (and their families) to ensure that the plan they make together works for them noting, “patients should always feel that they have a voice, and it is my goal to ensure that they feel heard and feel central in all decisions that we make together”.

While she enjoys all areas of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, some of her specific clinical interests include Adult Congenital Heart Disease, multifetal gestations (twins, and higher-order multiples), and complex deliveries (breech extraction of the second twin, operative vaginal delivery). Her research interests include Adult Congenital Heart Disease in the setting of Pregnancy, fetal anomalies, and fetal growth restriction. Her thesis project for Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship investigated the association between pregnancy and long-term cardiac events in individuals with congenital heart disease.

Dr. Son grew up in Alaska and first moved to Colorado for her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Being outdoors has been a part of her life since she was born and these days, in her spare time, she enjoys hiking and camping with her husband, kiddo, and two dogs.

In Maternal-Fetal Medicine, great medical care takes being an expert in the field while also understanding complicated pregnancies are not just a "medical issue".
